Pysanky Ukrainian Eggs (Forgiveness Eggs)
Dates & Times: Thu, March 28th & Sat. April 4th 1-4P;
OR Thursdays April 2nd & April 9th- 6:30-9:30P (paypal signup below)
Required materials: Please bring a sharp pencil, an old dish towel and any special symbols or patterns you would like to put on your eggs
Description:We will create beautiful symbolic eggs using brilliant dyes, melted beeswax and traditional Ukrainian tools.This is a batik process on raw eggs.
The magic of revealing the beauty of the egg as the wax is removed is so rewarding.The peace one feels while working with the smell of melted beeswax and the candle is calming (or sacred).
Instructor Ani Sinclair has taught this technique to adults and children and each one has totally loved his or her creation. With an M.A in Education she has taught this class in and to Girl Scouts for more than 10 years.
Ani calls these Forgiveness Eggs as there's more than just the physical skills of crafting them.When an artist chooses an eggshell for a canvas there is a good likelihood that it will break –sooner or later. Ani teaches, "Let your second thought be Forgiveness!"It's a bit like the Buddhist sand mandalasin that it's temporal art. Every egg has some mistake or unintended line or aspect – so one learns to forgive one's self for perceived imperfections.

This simple, flexible structure allows plenty of practice in cutting, folding and gluing paper and generally working with book arts tools and materials.
May 13th Class: The second class will teach basic Japanese Stab Binding techniques. These techniques reinforce the skills from the first class and add the element of working with needle and thread to create a binding that is both functional and decorative.
In both classes materials and methods for the embellishment of covers and pages, and the creation of closures are covered. Students also learn about the history of bookbinding, papermaking and printing during the class, especially as it relates to the type of binding being taught.
